Following the fire tragedy at AMRI Hospital in Kolkata last year, the health department issued notices to 70 hospitals to shut down OPDs functioning from basements. However, things went back to square one. In areas such as Raghunathpur, Atta, Chhalera, Haraula, Nithari and Khora among others, fire tenders are not able to reach inner areas due to narrow lanes. Woman alleges gang rape in Mahagun Metro Mall Ghaziabad

GHAZIABAD: A 24-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped inside an SUV parked at the Mahagun Metro Mall in Ghaziabad on Thursday. Police said the rapists were  friends  of the victim. While one of them later surrendered before cops, the other is on the run and may have taken refuge with an associate of a Haryana politician . The incident has also raised questions about security arrangements at the mall even as the management claimed they heard no alarm or cries for help.  The second-year engineering student had gone to EDM Mall around 4pm on Thursday when one of the accused,  Sandeep Bhati , called her up and asked her to come to the rear of the mall. When she reached there, he offered to take her to a beauty salon in Mahagun Mall for a hairdo. She thought of getting another woman friend along and tried to give her a buzz when the Ghazipur resident allegedly pulled her inside and drove off to the mall.  At the mall, the accused drove straight into the basement where his accomplice,

In jail, Nupur Talwar surfed channels for news

DASNA (GHAZIABAD): Her lips moved nervously in prayer and her hand still clutched the little Hanuman Chalisa as  Nupur Talwar entered Ghaziabad's  Dasna Jail  shortly after 6pm on Monday. The jail authorities did not prevent Nupur from taking the prayer book, which she had clutched all day at the court like a talisman, inside. That was the only concession she got in a day when two courts turned down her bail pleas in five hours, consigning her for a night at least to the 30x60 square feet Barrack 13 of the jail. It was a fate the dentist had dodged with her legal team for 15 months, but as the day drew to an end she found herself housed with 64 women prisoners in the barrack, some of them charged in murder and dowry cases. Sources said Nupur initially sat in a corner of the barrack and read from her book. Later in the evening, she surfed TV channels for news about her and also talked to a younger inmate, Chanchal, who is in jail in a dowry case. Sources said she talked to the othe
